Once I arrived in the Arab Emirates for business purpouses I did not imagine that there were not only a lot of oppurtunities for my professional activity but also a hypnothizing country to visit. Landing in Dubai had given me the immediate sensation of finding myself just in one of the numerous metropolises of the 21st century. I boobed, as there is a world of extraordinary spots to plunge into.
Indeed, in this post I would like to discuss exclusively about my desert safari, which initially I was even uncertain about booking or not. Fortunately, I finally decided to try it. A unique experience that did put me in touch with the intimate relationship that Emiratis have with the desert.
Dubai trips
Depending on the certain excursion you have chosen, there is a different meeting point: the one I had opted for was by off the road jeeps with some tracts of the route being performed on the back of camels. However, we were picked up from the hotel in the early afternoon by a skilful local tourist guide who drove us to the first target of our excursion: a Bedouin encampment.
Initially I was quite struck by the extremely tranquil atmosphere, which trasmitted me a great sense of balance, then we followed the guide who began telling us Bedouins’ traditions and how they are steadily swayed by territorial and weather conditions. Actually, the huge range of temperature is the main natural event to be considered, together with sandstorms, naturally. Bedouins are a very hospitable population: they lead us into some of their tents while the guide translated what they were telling us. Once inside the tent, we were invited to enjoy some tea with them which we willingly accepted. There were no chairs as they usually sit down on the ground and cross their legs. We did the same. Together with the herbal tea (having a very intense savour) we were offered some small cakes, that were made of pistachio. Simply excellent.
Just after the tea a Bedouin woman near me asked whether I would like to get a henna painting on my hand, which is an extremely old tradition going back to the first millennium. I was very charmed by such proposal, as I saw a gorgeous example of it on her hands: a bunch of flowers painted in refined style, which she said could last up to about 15 days. The painting dries up in around 10 minutes, afterwards you can do everything again with your hand. Don’t miss henna, it is so cozy!
The next phase of our tour was camel riding. As we all were quite well-experienced horse riders, it was not particularly difficult to understand the basic elements of camels’ behaviour, in order to get in touch with one’s animal and not to be “refused” by means of unpleasant reactions!
The end of our trip in the desert was not less appealing. As scheduled, our package included a late afternoon barbecue dinner, that turned out to be unforgettable. Lamb, mutton and chicken meat grilled, seasoned with some aromatic spices and served with different dishes of pulses, fresh vegetables and many mysterious sauces, which gave meat unexpected flavour and contributed to make this day a special one to remember.
