So you have a beautiful holiday home, You have a great location, the pillows are fluffed, the carpets are cleaned and the weather is perfect, now all you need is some bookings. Sometimes the web can seem too massive too many choices, far to easy to get lost in the millions of websites competing for position. What is your first step towards making money with your Beach vacation property or Bed and Breakfast? How do you use the Internet to your best advantage?

We know it can be expensive getting your vacation home found on the Internet so you want to maximize your marketing on promotional budget. It is not enough to create a website and launch it on the web, the top search engines are constantly looking for sites that have many connections across the web, the more links back to your site the better you will look to search engines.

One of you best tools is to use a Beach Accommodation Directory like bed and breakfast. There seems to be quiet a few General Accommodation directories out there, the drawback with these accommodation directories is that they are often enormous and unfocused, visitors must trowel through hours of listings before they find what they are looking for. These sites are very general in their focus, your listing can get lost in the crowd. You need a more focused rental directory that focuses in on the key market your customers are looking for, you have a beach accommodation by or near the beach, make it easy for your customers by sending them directly where they need to be.

One up and coming beach rental directory is Beach-rooms.com. This site has a few things going for it that you can take full advantage of. First of all, this Beach Accommodation Directory caters to a very specific niche, it caters to Beach Accommodation on or near the beach only. There is no occurrences of being absorbed into the masses on other listing categories like other directories. It is very user friendly, appealing to eye and the site developers are working extremely aggressively to have top search engine positioning within the next year.
Secondly, your Listing is free of charge. Beach-rooms offers this service for the simple reason that they need fresh content on their site.

It is a fairly new and developing site, in fact at the time of writing this article they were still in the development stage, but for this very reason it works to your advantage. Any Accommodation Directory you can find in its development stage will often offer great value to their new members, as they are hungry to develop their search engine positioning. Take strongadvantage of these free directory deals, because you never know, a aggressive Beach Web Directory could be sending hundreds, if not thousands of potential customers to your Beach Bed and Breakfast, Beach House, Beach Rental, Beach Rooms or Beach Condo, and you didn’t pay a cent for it, because you had the foresight to take advantage of a Beach Rental Directory in it’s early stages, frankly as a accommodation provider you have nothing to lose.

Another brilliant way of driving specific traffic to your Beach Accommodation is to take advantage of Google Adwords. They allow you to specifically target your customers using beach related keywords such as, pet friendly beach, beach accommodation, beach bed and breakfast, beach rental, beach vacation rentals etc. Create your custom Ad using your own words and try different wording to test your results. If you are on a budget, don’t worry you can set a daily expenses to match your budget. go to Google check out this option.

A good FREE option with Google is to add your Vacation property to Google maps, simply go to the Google Local Business Center in Google to register for a google account if you do not already have one, at this point you can click on the add a new business icon. And fill in the details of your beach vacation property. After you finish this process you will have a spoton the Internet.

Join an online forum, search for a couple that is directly related to you property, whether it is a bed and breakfast, vacation rental or beachfront condo. Make insightful contributions to the forum you join and sign each contribution with your property name or web address.

Remember none of this will help you if your Business website is not up to much, your site is most likely the very first look possibly guests will have of your property, make a good impression, with all the choice on the net, you do not want to lose any clients once they have actually found you. So make sure your photo’s are not to dark, the site is easy to navigate through, the content relevant with easy access to rates, availability, location, and general area information, highlight any special features of your property whether it be a stellar location or is wheel chair accessible. Savvy net users know to check how many visitors have been through there site every day using google analytics, they know how long each stayed and what pages were most popular, if you find that you are getting the visitors but they are not hanging around, it might be time to update the site or update the pics or even update the property, something is not appealing to visitors and if you do not want to lose business you have got to make it right.

Good Luck, the Internet is a mine field but if you follow the above advice it could help you drive extra traffic to your property.

Portable folding hammocks can be a wonderful part of everbody’s life. One ought to utilize them wherever … on your deck, at the beach, in your garden, at the campground, at the playground, as a spare bed, even in your office for a swift power nap. They make considerate and long-lasting gifts (make sure it’s a DOUBLE hammock for wedding gifts!). Portable hammocks are truly one of the splendors of the earth.

But one should be wary. Not all outdoor hammocks are created the same.

There Are A Number Of Things One Should Think About:

-How heavy is it to carry? (If one needs to bring it any distance, this is crucial. I on one occasion went on a 2-week camping and climbing trip to the Tetons in the U.S., and we all had to lug in a LOT of gear. There was nothing worse than the heavy hammock I had to carry! One day, I was climbing a 1500 foot face of a mountain wearing my backpack and “portable” hammock and hammock stand. When I was about two hundred feet from the top, I quite simply ran out of strength. I remember just standing on a small crevice, with no hand or finger holds, and wondering what I was going to do. I had an inexperienced climber belaying me, my pack was too heavy, and, unfortunately, I could not jettison anything because there were climbers below me. Luckily, after standing there for what seemed eternity, my strength returned and I was able to climb to the peak of the mountain. Lesson learned? From then on I carried the lightest portable folding hammock I could find!

-Does it have a carrying case?

-Does it come with portable pillow?

-How much weight can it support? How many bodies do you desire it to hold? Will you ever make use of the hammock as a double?

-How long is it? (I’m 6′4″, there’s not much worse than one where my feet droop off the end!)

-Is the hammock stand variable for differently-sized people?

-Is it easy or difficult to set up?

-How easy is it to tear down?

-Does it require any tools? (Not impressive if it does require it, in my judgment.)

-Does it have an easy folding & locking system?

-What materials is it made out of? Is it high quality? Tough?

-What material is the frame constructed out of?

-Will it deal with getting damp? (One new owner mentioned her two-week old hammock stand was beginning to rust!)

-Does it freely swing? (A key point for my needs - it’s hard to envision a hammock that doesn’t swing, but maybe that’s just my point of view!)

-What’s the cost?

-What kind of warranty does it have?

-If one is purchasing via the internet, is there a charge for shipping? And is there a return policy?

Finally, here is an important tip … price should NOT be your foremost concern. This is a hammock and stand that can be enjoyed for the remainder of your life, so a few additional bucks at this time is worth getting the finest portable folding hammock.

Going cheap to Seattle Or cheap to Argentina can be a serious blast if you know a few tips and tricks and of course plan out some of your trip ahead of time. Take Seattle for example. You can easily go spend an entire day down at the Pike Place Market and never once get even close to being bored. The Pike Place Market is a many level (I think 4 levels if memory serves me right) complex of really super interesting shops and curios, street performers and fish markets, restaurants and espresso shops. There is literally something for all ages.

Then, in my very own personal opinion if one wants to go cheap to Seattle there are likely no better cheap eats (food) than at the Three Sisters Bakery in the Pike Place Market. They have constantly been power ranked as the best sandwich in Seattle for I don’t know, maybe 10 years now! No kidding they really are that good. I have had sandwiches in country’s from Russia to Argentina and never had better. And no I don’t own stock in the place.

From the market it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the Ferry terminal where for just a couple of dollars (if you’re into walking and don’t take your car) you can go island hoping to 6 or 8 Islands all in one day. You simply buy the multi stop pass or whatever they call it now and walk on to the ferry. You can then get off on any of the islands that they make their stops at. It’s a complete blast that costs less than a lot of bad times I’ve had that’s for sure. And if you’re up for it you can get the multi day pass and hop Islands for a few days spending the night at the ones you want to check out a little further.

Argentina has my favorite backpackers paradise in the entire world, and her name is Patagonia! Oh my goodness what an amazing spot. To be in the middle of such awe inspiring beauty is absolutely just indescribable at best. Never have I seen such diversity in nature coupled with a few towns that are as different as milk toast and rocket fuel. You honestly feel like you just got off the boat in Switzerland or Austria not South America.

Now, so how do you do this place on the cheap? Easy, like I said it’s a backpackers paradise so you get out into nature and see things I will bet you never saw before not even on all the Natural channels and programs on Television. This place is the Disneyland of the outdoors. It will blow your mind, all I can say is… Better bring a camera.

FL Jupiter is one of those spots that you arrive and within the first 10 minutes you already know you never want to leave again for as long as you live. With its very cool and very recent Yacht club addition to the town and its softly meandering River Walk FL Jupiter is one of those places you could easily call home.

Ok, you could easily call it home until you check out the prices of real estate. Then compared to the rest of the United States and much of the world you might find yourself gasping for breath. Yes there are some few houses that would be considered a bargain by the locals there on the outskirts of town well away from anywhere you would actually want to live, but considered a bargain none the less.

Yes, absolutely the local market in FL Jupiter has taken a hammering along with the rest of the nation during what analysts are calling a market correction (I call it a recession). But still when compared to the rest of the market across the country it’s still pretty pricey indeed.

The real value here is in having rentals. Why you might ask? Well, everyone has to live somewhere and you can then take advantage of these high priced Haciendas and get into the rental market for the service people. The who people? The service people.

You see, anywhere there are people with a lot of money and trust me there’s money in FL Jupiter for sure, plenty of it. Those people with the cash want other people to take care of stuff for them like yard work, house cleaning, driving, washing the cars, taking care of the kids and so on. They don’t want to be bothered with those kinds of tasks why would they? But the people who perform those tasks need places to live and with the very high price of real estate in FL Jupiter those places are few and far between.

So, where is the opportunity Mr. the glass is half full? Well it doesn’t have to be Jupiter FL it could actually be any place with this same type of a scenario unfolding. But here’s what you look for. Focus your search on old school buildings, old factories, old warehouses, old pier canneries ect… These old places can many times be renovated into very nice quaint apartment complexes just perfect to put 20 or 50 units into.

Believe you me these types of renovation projects can pay off handsomely in the end if you set a budget and stick to it during the build out process. One word of caution to the wise, stay away from purchasing old churches. People get spooked at the thought of living in an old church no matter what their Religious systems are.

Nov 15

The steady drone of chain-sawing from nearby and distant olive groves can only mean that winter is fast approaching. For (as Pooh would have noted) chain-sawing means wood piles, and olive logs, and wood stoves (zompas), with maybe a little something simmering on the top. And cosy evenings with shutters closed, and crosswords, music, books, or DVD of your choice as temperatures fall and winds rise outside.

Crete though has an average of 300 days of sunshine annually, and statistically 22 of these fall in November, so don’t put the walking gear away yet. But shorter days require shorter walks, and this one, from Krios beach over to Vienna, approx. 45 minutes each way, is ideal.
Krios is 9km west of Paleochora, at the end of the road, although the E4 footpath continues to Elafonisi (see below). There’s a twice-a-day bus (around 7.00am and 2.00pm, check in the bus station), or drive/take a taxi ; the 2-hour walk through Koundoura is uninspiring once the road leaves the coast, and not recommended.

As with Kadros, we first visited Vienna with Tony Fennymore, and his notes, included here, will provide much information as to what to see and look for there. From the car park and taverna on Krios beach, walk along the shore to a rocky promontory, and climb over this to a small sheltered bay with a rock islet offshore. At the far end of the beach the path heads inland, way-marked with cairns and E4 black/yellow paint, climbing to join a rough track. Leave the track at a cairn, and take a path, left, gradually losing height, eventually veering left down a rather loose gully to reach the sea.

Vienna is a fascinating place, where “there would appear to be a partially man-made anchorage out of a natural, protected harbour, and the remains of a Hellenistic/Roman sanctuary.” On the shore are the broken remains of several marble columns, which Tony believed once formed a temple here. “The actual building appears to have been located just a short distance back from the shoreline, where there is a raised platform for a room, with a ramp down to the sea, and the columns appear to have formed a portico/arcade at the front.” Where the columns came from, or how they arrived here, is a Stonehenge-like enigma, as they “are of marble or a type of red granite which does not appear to be of local origin.”

So why was a temple built here? Tony thought that it “could well have been a sanctuary or place of worship, and acted as a place of pilgrimage when voyaging around the headland”, and where libations and offerings were made before or after a long and hazardous sea journey.
Shards and fragments of pottery are everywhere, the remains of vessels once containing oil or wine. Tony speculates on the importance of the natural cave in the outcrop high above the cove. “The cave is no doubt the ‘key’ to the site, although there is no evidence whatsoever of any human habitation or use of the cave as a place of worship. In ancient times it could have been deemed to be a ‘home’ of one of the Gods/Goddesses, and it may have been capable of producing natural sounds, ie. from the wind - a sign that the Gods were speaking, or a Siren.” The Sirens were mythical sea-nymphs who lured passing sailors to their deaths with their sweetness of song. Odysseus, who possibly passed this way, filled his crew’s ears with wax, and lashed himself to the ship’s mast, to avoid such a fate. The climb to the cave takes around 20 minutes, and provides a fine retrospective view of the bay, but nothing of historical importance.

The water level in Hellenistic times (323 - 67BC) would have been far deeper than now, due to the raising of the level of the shoreline at this end of the island. “The cove/lagoon has a natural mole to form this protected anchorage, and it would appear that rocks have been cleared away from the cove so as to facilitate the mooring of boats. No doubt the cove was an ideal lair for pirates, and the site would have been looted.”

Water was of course essential, and “to the east of the platform is evidence of a well or pit, an important feature insomuch as the anchorage could well have been a stopping place to replenish water supplies of the boats.”

So what happened here? “From the various positions of the columns, the sanctuary was either badly damaged by an earthquake, or some attempt has been made to remove the columns for re-use.” That is, the site was destroyed and ransacked. Quietly contemplating before walking back to Krios, sitting on a column brought here over two thousand years ago, only one thing is certain - we shall never really know ……

So, ‘kalo xeimonas’ - have a good winter, and remember the words of the poet Shelley:
“If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind ?” In just a few weeks time the almond blossom will be appearing, and soon afterwards the cherry trees will be “hung with bloom along the bough.”

The 10km walk from Krios to Elafonisi is described in our book ‘Ten Walks around Paleohora’ by Bob & Lynne Tait, available from ‘To Delfini’ bookshop in Paleochora.

Hilton Head, South Carolina is a popular vacation destination for thousands of familes each year. There are some people who, myself included, want a laid back atmosphere to take the family. If that is you, then Hilton Head Island is your place.

There are many things you can do on your trip to Hilton Head. Of course you have the sandy beaches, which is not crowded at all compared to some of your other famous South Carolina beaches. You have pretty much all you need at Hilton Head.

Hilton Head island’s busy time of the year is the same as all other hot vacation spots. We went the last week in July. It definitely could have been worse. It was not too crowded for my tastes. I will say the Saturday that we were there was a bit more crowded, but that is to be expected. The weekends busier.

We have never been there at any other time, but many have said that sometimes the eating areas will close periodically throughout the year just to get things cleaned up a bit. If it’s too cold to dive in the ocean, you can always play lots of golf. If I remember correctly, there are over 20 golf courses around the area, so if you like to hit a few, a Hilton Head Island Vacation is your place, regardless of the weather.

According to various travel blogs, visitors to Hilton Head Island arrive and leave on Saturdays, which probably explains what I mentioned above. It will be more crowded on weekends, especially on Saturdays. This year we arrived on Sunday evening, which was actually very easy. There were no traffic issues, and neither was the checking in process.

Become accustomed to the rules and regulations at Hilton Head Island. No alcohol on the beach. You won’t get away with it either. Leave everything living on the beach. Sometimes that can be a challenge with the young ones, some of them would grab sand dollars and starfish that came in with the tide in the mornings. That is not something you want to do.

Bicycling is common on Hilton Head, and there are several bike paths all over the island. I have never seen so many tourists on bikes in my entire life….they are all over the place. Especially at the Sea Pines area. There are a few good reasons to travel by bicycle, there’s no parking problem and it’s awesome exercise. There are plenty of places to rent bicycles.

Hilton Head Island is a wonderful place to take the family. I love visiting there and will continue to do so. It can be a little more costly than some tourist spots, but I think that it is worth it. My whole family loves it and I am positive yours will also.

Surfing in Guadeloupe is possible as the water and air temperatures are reasonably warm. With over 300 kilometers of coastline there are loads of great surf spots primarily on the coast of Grande-Terre, however there a few are on Grand-Basse and Terre-de-Haut. The geography and situation of the islands and their position mean they pickup Northwesterly, Northerly, Easterly and Southerly swells!

Guadeloupe is a great location if you’re looking for good consistent waves, warm water, nice people, nice weather and quality food all year round! The lifestyle is very relaxed and with over 30 surfing spots there’s something for every style and skill level from beginners through to the advanced surfers.

Even though surf season lasts from October through to May the other months can still offer quality conditions too. The best season is during winter (October to March) as there is an average of between 1.5m to 2.5m as this is the hurricane season so the swell can be awesome! The waves break on coral, lava or rock reefs, so they’re consistent, plus with the small height difference between tides, it means that you can surf all day long at the same spot.

If you’re an advanced surfer you’ll find a wide range of challenging hollow waves from autumn through to spring (September to March) as the swells are bigger and the waves are more consistent.

For those new to surfing or if you’re looking to start, the waves are more adapted during summer as the swells are more often than not smaller and the waves aren’t as big so they can be more fun.

Basse-Terre (western island) is best during the cyclone season as it gets south to south east swells. Grande-Terre (eastern island) receives most of the swells and provides more consistent surf as its open to the Atlantic.

The beaches at Le Moule, Port-Louis and Anse Bertrand are the best between October and May. Sainte-Anne, Saint-François and Petit-Havre are best from June through to August.

GUADELOUPE SURF SPOTS
The surf spots below are the most well known, however there are heaps of secret spots that locals know of as well as surf clubs, surfari’s etc. Please note that we’re focusing solely on the Grande-Terre (eastern island).

SURFING IN THE NORTH OF GUADELOUPE
From December to April there’s good surf around Port Louis and Anse Bertrand with Northwesterly to Northerly swells generated from the North Atlantic. As this coastline faces north west its almost always offshore. For quality surf you need a moderate-sized groundswell. Arguably, the best waves on the island can be found at Port Louis, which has long nice rights and a shorter left, but its only good if there’s decent sized swell. You can also find some good right-hand walls at Anse Bertrand. Generally the north coast has some sweet surf with some sweet reef at Plombier, Anse Laborde and Pointe d’Antigues, although they’re best for experts.

SURF SPOTS
The below spots are situated along the coast in the north east of Grande-Terre between ‘Port-Louis’, ‘Pointe de la Grande Vigie’.
