Historical fans will revel in a visit to the Apartheid Museum located next to Gold Reef City. Eating Houses cater to the many distinct tastes of folks coming to Cup South Africa.

Many of you will discover your jaunt to South Africa as being an adventure to take in some of the wildlife as well as seeing Cup South Africa. General Information
Cyprus is the 3rd largest island in the Mediterranean sea, with vibrant history, perfect climate, beautiful scenery and a warm welcome, North Cyprus is the ideal place for a fantastic holiday. Northern Cyprus was colonized by Great Britain and still have good relations with the United Kingdom over the years. North Cyprus is wealth of years and years of history, including medieval castles and rich archaeological sites to enjoy, as well as beautiful golden beaches and fascinating wildlife. Cyprus received over 300 days of sunshine, with clear blue seas, unspoiled landscapes and beaches making it a perfect spot for a away-from-it-all holiday.

Among the Mediterranean, the people of Northern Cyprus are generally very friendly and hospitable, and often go out of their way to share this beautiful treasure of an island with everyone. Holidays in North Cyprus are not complete without a taste of the wonderful variety of delicious Turkish-Cypriot cuisines. Visitors should definitely try eating out at least once during their Holidays in North Cyprus. So whether friend of the sun, a nature lover, a keen walker, an archaeologist or water sports fanatic, this little island is the ideal spot for your holiday and you will definitely want to return again, and again!

Brief History
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), commonly called Northern Cyprus or North Cyprus, is a de facto independent republic located to the North of Cyprus. Just 9 years after the Greek-Cypriot coup, North Cyprus declared their independence on November 15th, 1983. The Greek-Cypriot coup was intended to annex the island to Greece which in turn triggered the Turkish invasion of 1974. North Cyprus’ independence however, is recognized only by Turkey, on which it has become dependent for economic, political and military support. Unfortunately, to the rest of the world and other international communities including the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus surpasses the territory of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Army maintains force over North Cyprus and this apparently meets with the approval of most of the Turkish-Cypriot population here. However, the Republic of Cyprus regards the Turkish Army as an illegal occupation force and its presence has also been denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions. Many attempts to reach a solution to the dispute have futile so far. Kofi Annan of the UN planned to reunite the island in 2004 and his proposal was accepted by majority of the Turkish-Cypriots in a referendum, but a resounding majority of the Greek-Cypriots rejected it altogether.

Although divided, North Cyprus still remains an ideal holiday destination and a fantastic place to visit as it is full of rich and interesting history from ancient times right through to the present.

Currency
The local currency is the Turkish Lira (Turk Lirasi, TL) but banks, larger hotels, most restaurants and markets also accept Great British Pounds , American Dollars and Euros. Travellers’ cheques and major credit cards are widely accepted.

Mount Kinabalu National Park is the place to start if you want to climb this mountain on Borneo in South East Asia.

Mount Kinabalu at 13,435 feet (4095 meters) above sea level is situated in the East Malaysia state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.

It is the highest climbable mountain in South East Asia.

I went up the mountain in October 2009 and had a great time.

I will share with you my experiences and give you some pointers.

What to do and what not to do.

I quite like a bit of adventure, something different from relaxing on a sandy beach or by a hotel pool.

I’ve trekked in the Himalayas and in the jungles of Borneo so I really liked the idea of climbing one of the highest mountains in the South East Asia region.

In preparation you need to reserve your accommodation in Kinabalu National Park at Laban Rata, which is two thirds of the way up the mountain and you need to sleep there before you tackle the final one third.

After registering at the main park entrance, you will need to arrange for a guide to accompany you on the Walk up.

You then get a bus up to the entrance to the mountain. After an initial descent to cross a bridge by a waterfall.

Then the path becomes steep and remains steep until you get to the top.

Within the first hour we had a torrential downpour that made us very wet and the path very slippery.

There were handrails in some places but I would not call it a well-maintained path.
Some parts of the path are stepped but the steps are uneven and can be very high.

It is very hard on the knees.

Unless you are very sure footed you will need at least one walking stick, which is important for the ascent and descent.

Also be aware that the last third of the climb on the second day starts about 3am and the terrain is sheer smooth rock.

You have to pull yourself up by a rope, to get to the top; this is not for the totally unprepared.

Remember that acclimatisation is very important as you climb Mount Kinabalu you climb up quite quickly.

So you need to stop fairly frequently.

I would strongly suggest that you stay in the Park or in the near vicinity, the night before your climb.

The advantages are that you can start earlier and have a walk the day before your climb to adjust to the altitude.

Also you can enjoy the delights of the Malaysia countryside.

On the many Mount Kinabalu websites it shows happy people walking along a flat path in the sunshine and nowhere did it show just how steep it got. Only the bit at the very top was featured as steep.

I did speak to some fellow climbers on the way down and the general consensus was that the website made this climb look as though anyone could do it regardless of age or fitness or experience.

This is not really the case.

It is fairly tough not a pleasant walk but something that must be accomplished.

I would say that with enough correct preparation, most people could at least make it to Laban Rata rest house that in its self is satisfying.

Do not expect to always have views of the sunrise, at the top of Kinabalu because cloud or bad weather often prevent it.

You may not see a wonderful sunrise but at least you will have the satisfaction of getting to the top.

I would encourage anyone to have ago just … BE PREPARED!

The Peak District in Derbyshire is perfect for family activity breaks because it is so compact. Within a relatively small area there are plenty of places to stay ranging from five star hotels near Chatsworth, to Bed and Breakfast’s, to self catering in a country cottage.

Of course the main activity in the Peak District is walking and the compactness of the area means a lot can be covered in a short time. Even if you have never walked on the hills for leisure this is a good place to start. There
are many circular walks to suit every ability and age group. It is good for families with young children, as they love to walk and see the sheep. Lovely in springtime when there are lambs around.

For the more experienced walker there are the less travelled routes such as Kinder Plateau. The route the whole way around is a very long day’s walk but the varying views rival anywhere in Britain. A very popular walk is to go up Jacobs ladder onto Kinder edge, walk along the edge and back down into Edale. This walk takes you past some amazing stone shapes as good, if not better than any man made sculptures. These massive rocks were washed down from Scotland at the end of the ice age!

Edale, which is the start and end of many walks, is a typical Peak District village and in spite of its many visitors still retains its original character because there have not been any additional new houses. The newest building is an Information Centre, which is a really good place to start your break. There are also a couple of good pubs which welcome walkers, and match their food to a long day on the hills.

Of course walking isn’t the only activity in the Peak District National Park. There are plenty of centres where you can join a pony trek and there are plenty of bridle paths for the individual horse rider, which can be hired from the numerous stables. It is also very popular with mountain bikers with many paths to share with walkers.

Many people visit the Peak District to hangglide or paraglide from Mam Tor (there are other places too) or there is the gliding club at Huchlow.

Some of the hotels organise sightseeing helicopter rides and one hotel will organise a day out in a classic car complete with picnic. If you really must, there are a few tracks for four-wheel drives but these are not too popular with those who have gone to get away from noise and traffic.

Although it may not strictly count as an activity there are the beautiful houses of Chatsworth and Hadden Hall to visit.

One activity we shouldn’t forget is shopping. There is a very attractive shopping area at Chatsworth, and the lovely town of Bakewell is well worth a trip to just saunter around, market day is good, and of course don’t forget to try Bakewell pudding!

I’m not one for lying in the sun. I am more relaxed and get a better buzz but doing something. So my travel breaks generally involve doing something.

I love adventure travel breaks that maybe more adventurous than some but not as out there as others.

I especially love my short walking breaks.

One walking break I enjoyed was hiking down into the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring and can be overwhelming at 277 miles long 18 miles wide and over a mile deep so you have to pick and plan your trek carefully.

When I did the trek I was told going down is optional but coming back up is mandatory.

I wanted a day’s walk so decided on going down the South Kaibab Trail across the Tonto Trail and then back up the Bright Angel Trail. The total length of the trek was around 13miles.

I set off at daybreak with all the right gear, plenty of water and food and a clearly mapped out route.

It’s better to hike down the Kaibab, as it’s mostly uneven earth steps all the way, and there is little shade or water so hiking it in the morning, when it’s cooler, makes sense.

The South Kaibab Trail is a dramatic ridgeline descent, which gives wonderful panoramic views of the canyon from the start. You have to be a bit careful on some points on the ridge because the wind can be very strong and the ridge can be fairly narrow!

Just beyond where the trail joins the Tonto trail there are toilets. When I did the walk I had to queue to use them because a horse riding party, on their way back up from a nights camping, had stopped for the toilets a minute before me. It was handy for getting someone to take photographs of me next to the Tonto trail sign.

The Tonto Trail is a flat walk across a plateau but it is easy to lose the track as flash floods and wind etc can erode the path and it’s easy to get of course and follow a dry riverbed rather than the track. There are also a couple of places to stop in the shade, which is very welcome as the heat builds.

On the way down I met a few hikers but on the Tonto trail I met no one. If you get lost you could be in trouble because if you lose the trail it would be very difficult to find it again.

When I joined The Bright Angel Trail at Indian gardens there was a lot more people, because this trail is the busiest hiking trail down the canyon. Popular for hikers, campers and mule trains. A well-maintained sloping path, emergency phones, with regular drinking water and covered rest houses all the way up, it is said to be the safest trail in Grand Canyon.

Being able to talk to others on the way back up made it a more pleasant experience and the time to get back up to the rim didn’t seem so long.

How did I feel the next day … fantastic!

And now as I recall the thrill of the Bright Angel Trail I still feel fantastic.

If you have ever thought of doing this.
Stop thinking and just ,,.

GO DO IT!

I’m glad I did.
