Macedonia - that unforgettable name evoking images of ancient, great civilizations and exotic adventure.- is also a warm and welcoming modern-day republic in the very heart of southeastern Europe.

While easily accessible from all points abroad, and boasting all the amenities of the Western world, Macedonia remains one of Europe’s last great undiscovered countries: a natural paradise of mountains, lakes and rivers, where life moves to a different rhythm, amidst the sprawling grandeur of rich historical ruins and idyllic villages that have remained practically unchanged for centuries.

Macedonia’s geographical and cultural position

Macedonia’s geographical and cultural position as bridge between East and West, as the crossroads between Christian Europe and the mystical Orient, is attested to today in its inhabitants. The Macedonian people – a mixture of ancient Macedonians and Slavic tribes that settled here starting in the 5th century C.E. – make up the greatest part of a country where that mixed population is a vibrant reminder of Macedonia’s rich and lengthy history. Minority populations include: Albanians, arriving first from mountains of Albania and Kosovo; a Turkish population established during Ottoman times; The Roma, hailing ultimately from far-off India; Serbs, Bosniaks and Croats; and Vlachs, famous tradesmen and likely descendants of ancient Romans.

In essence, today’s Macedonia is a unique patchwork of cultures, where Balkan bloodlines have mixed with others more exotic still. Macedonia resonates with the names of the many peoples who have set foot on its eternal soil: from Armenians, Avars and Ashkenazi to Hellenes, Peonians and Gorani; from Kumans, Montenegrins and Jews to Dardanians, Ukrainians and Bulgars.

Such a diverse range of peoples has co-existed for thousands of years in Macedonia, a place where hospitality always welcomes visitors and it comes from the heart. And indeed, the country’s charms have not been lost on an increasing number of Westerners today who are now choosing it as their second home!

In addition to its diversity,, Macedonia’s. cultural richness is expressed in its archaeological legacy. Although just a little country, it holds many antique theaters, Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques, in addition to relics from the Stone Age and even earlier periods of human civilization.

The oldest traces of human habitation in Macedonia are the cryptic, 30,000 year-old stone engravings or “rock art” unearthed in the Kratovo area, as well as the astronomical observatory/ religious ritual site of Taticev Kamen, dating back almost 4,000 years.

The word Macedonia instantly conjures up memories of Philip II and his son Alexander the Great, legendary emperor of the 4th century B.C.E. who brought great expanses of the known world under Macedonian rule. In this period, and the Hellenistic and Roman ones that followed it, Macedonia reached the apogee of its influence and power. Today, many ruins remain to attest to this ancient heritage, in the sites of cities such as Heraclea, Stobi and Skupi, strewn with amphitheaters and temples, and decorated with intricate mosaics and frescoes.

The missionary Apostle Paul brought Christianity to Macedonia for the first time. Nine centuries later, his Byzantine successors Cyril and Methodius created a brand new alphabet, the precursor to Cyrillic, to expedite their missionary work with the Slavic-speaking Orthodox Christians of the Balkans. Macedonia’s experience of Christianity has thus always been linked with literacy and education. In fact, the first Slavic university was established in the 10th century, in placid Ohrid - famous during Byzantine times for its 365 churches, one for each day of the year.

Today, Macedonia’s Christian heritage is visible everywhere, from the myriad churches that fill up the landscape throughout the country to the enormous “Millennium Cross” that lights up the Skopje night sky from high atop nearby Mt. Vodno.

Following the decline of the Byzantium Empire, Macedonia and the entire Balkans came under control of the Ottoman Turks. Macedonia owes its Oriental influences to five centuries of Ottoman rule, a phenomenon that affected everything from cuisine and language to architecture and religion. The mosques of Tetovo and Skopje and the latter city’s grand castle (Kale), and Stone Bridge exemplify vividly Ottoman aestheticism.

While firmly rooted in its traditions and nostalgia for the past, today’s Macedonia is also a forward-looking country that has embraced its diversity and is becoming integrated within European political and economic institutions, continually expanding its links to the greater global community and economy. It thus provides the curious traveler with the best of both worlds: age-old traditions, historical treasures, and a pristine natural environment, as well as all of the modern amenities, services and consumer goods that today’s sophisticated travelers need. Macedonia today is an undiscovered jewel in the heart of Europe, offering something for tourists of all ages, nations, interests and desires.

General Information
Cyprus is the 3rd largest island in the Mediterranean sea, with vibrant history, perfect climate, beautiful scenery and a warm welcome, North Cyprus is the ideal place for a fantastic holiday. Northern Cyprus was colonized by Great Britain and still have good relations with the United Kingdom over the years. North Cyprus is wealth of years and years of history, including medieval castles and rich archaeological sites to enjoy, as well as beautiful golden beaches and fascinating wildlife. Cyprus received over 300 days of sunshine, with clear blue seas, unspoiled landscapes and beaches making it a perfect spot for a away-from-it-all holiday.

Among the Mediterranean, the people of Northern Cyprus are generally very friendly and hospitable, and often go out of their way to share this beautiful treasure of an island with everyone. Holidays in North Cyprus are not complete without a taste of the wonderful variety of delicious Turkish-Cypriot cuisines. Visitors should definitely try eating out at least once during their Holidays in North Cyprus. So whether friend of the sun, a nature lover, a keen walker, an archaeologist or water sports fanatic, this little island is the ideal spot for your holiday and you will definitely want to return again, and again!

Brief History
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), commonly called Northern Cyprus or North Cyprus, is a de facto independent republic located to the North of Cyprus. Just 9 years after the Greek-Cypriot coup, North Cyprus declared their independence on November 15th, 1983. The Greek-Cypriot coup was intended to annex the island to Greece which in turn triggered the Turkish invasion of 1974. North Cyprus’ independence however, is recognized only by Turkey, on which it has become dependent for economic, political and military support. Unfortunately, to the rest of the world and other international communities including the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus surpasses the territory of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Army maintains force over North Cyprus and this apparently meets with the approval of most of the Turkish-Cypriot population here. However, the Republic of Cyprus regards the Turkish Army as an illegal occupation force and its presence has also been denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions. Many attempts to reach a solution to the dispute have futile so far. Kofi Annan of the UN planned to reunite the island in 2004 and his proposal was accepted by majority of the Turkish-Cypriots in a referendum, but a resounding majority of the Greek-Cypriots rejected it altogether.

Although divided, North Cyprus still remains an ideal holiday destination and a fantastic place to visit as it is full of rich and interesting history from ancient times right through to the present.

Currency
The local currency is the Turkish Lira (Turk Lirasi, TL) but banks, larger hotels, most restaurants and markets also accept Great British Pounds , American Dollars and Euros. Travellers’ cheques and major credit cards are widely accepted.

The Peak District in Derbyshire is perfect for family activity breaks because it is so compact. Within a relatively small area there are plenty of places to stay ranging from five star hotels near Chatsworth, to Bed and Breakfast’s, to self catering in a country cottage.

Of course the main activity in the Peak District is walking and the compactness of the area means a lot can be covered in a short time. Even if you have never walked on the hills for leisure this is a good place to start. There
are many circular walks to suit every ability and age group. It is good for families with young children, as they love to walk and see the sheep. Lovely in springtime when there are lambs around.

For the more experienced walker there are the less travelled routes such as Kinder Plateau. The route the whole way around is a very long day’s walk but the varying views rival anywhere in Britain. A very popular walk is to go up Jacobs ladder onto Kinder edge, walk along the edge and back down into Edale. This walk takes you past some amazing stone shapes as good, if not better than any man made sculptures. These massive rocks were washed down from Scotland at the end of the ice age!

Edale, which is the start and end of many walks, is a typical Peak District village and in spite of its many visitors still retains its original character because there have not been any additional new houses. The newest building is an Information Centre, which is a really good place to start your break. There are also a couple of good pubs which welcome walkers, and match their food to a long day on the hills.

Of course walking isn’t the only activity in the Peak District National Park. There are plenty of centres where you can join a pony trek and there are plenty of bridle paths for the individual horse rider, which can be hired from the numerous stables. It is also very popular with mountain bikers with many paths to share with walkers.

Many people visit the Peak District to hangglide or paraglide from Mam Tor (there are other places too) or there is the gliding club at Huchlow.

Some of the hotels organise sightseeing helicopter rides and one hotel will organise a day out in a classic car complete with picnic. If you really must, there are a few tracks for four-wheel drives but these are not too popular with those who have gone to get away from noise and traffic.

Although it may not strictly count as an activity there are the beautiful houses of Chatsworth and Hadden Hall to visit.

One activity we shouldn’t forget is shopping. There is a very attractive shopping area at Chatsworth, and the lovely town of Bakewell is well worth a trip to just saunter around, market day is good, and of course don’t forget to try Bakewell pudding!

Maybe it’s because of Britain’s colder climate, or perhaps because the British are reluctant to show ignorance, but compared to the habits of other European countries like France, Italy or Spain, who enjoy wine on a daily basis from an early age, the British public have taken a long time to accept the health and leisurely benefits of the oldest drink known to mankind.

However, in recent years, due in part to greater availability and lower prices, wine has seen a boom in popularity in Britain, and has for many become an indispensable part of cultural life - particularly in London.

The rise in the popularity of wine-culture has seen many excellent wine bars and specialist wine restaurants appearing throughout the capital – and has also meant that older wine bars have been given much-deserved attention. Some of the best places for wine around London include Bedford & Strand, Cellar Gascon, the Cork & Bottle, Corks Wine Bar, The Forge and Zakudia.

As well as a plethora of top-quality wine bars, this newfound love for the grape has also seen a surge in wine-orientated activities becoming available around London - from courses on wine-tasting at the London Wine Academy, to the very popular self-guided tours of Vinopolis. A favourite among wine-lovers of all palettes, these tours show you all the key regions in the wine-making world, as well as some of the newer, less famous producers, including China and Thailand. As well as some excellent samples, Vinopolis’s resident expert Tom Forrest is on hand to lend his expertise and experience.

Like Vinopolis, which is situated just off the River Thames, many of the wine bars and wine-based entertainment centres are in close proximity to the best restaurants and hotels in London. So if you fancy a chance to test your palate alongside exquisite food, or if you don’t fancy walking or taxiing home (or if you don’t think you’ll be able to manage it!) then you can stay in a top-class hotel instead.

Find a decent wine restaurant or wine bar used to be quite tricky. In the past most people visiting London would simply head to a trendy area such as Soho armed with a copy of the Lonely Planet or Time Out travel guide. These days, there are plenty of websites and online directories which will help you to find quality, rated wine bars and restaurants nearby.

So if you’ve booked your flights to London, make sure to explore Britain’s growing obsession with all things Vino! But remember to enjoy responsibly!
