Hilton Head is one of the most attractive tourist areas in the Southeast. It is really popular with those living in the southern United States. It is a very comfortable place to vacation and it is a somewhat accessible drive from just about any location in the southeast. There is not a lot of hustle and bustle that you might get with the larger, more commercialized beach vacation spots.
There are approximately 15 miles of beach in Hilton Head. There are a handful of popular spots for tourists wanting to spend a lot of time on the beach. We have only been to a couple of beaches. For the most part the beaches are easy to get to. They are relatively flat, so if you are a runner for a biker, early in the morning on the beach are a great time to be out.
The tides are usually low in the mornings but they rise rather quickly as the day progresses. The crowds usually get on the beach at around 10 or 11 in the morning. Even at its busiest times, the beaches were not too crowded. There was plenty of room to do anything you wanted to do without having to run into anyone. As you would expect the most crowded times were on the weekend, specifically on Saturday. So if you do want to find a good spot on Saturdays you might want to get out there a some time earlier.
The last Hilton Head beach we stayed at had everything you needed. There were restrooms and changing rooms. Beach showers were available so you could get the sand off of you when you decided to call it quits for the day. Volleyball nets were available. There were not a lot of nets, so if you wanted to play you would have to get a spot early in the day. They were always being used when we where on the beach.
There was also a bar that was a frequented spot later in the day. It was almost on the hotel property but was not limited to hotel patrons. Anyone could stop in. Drinks were served every night. Live music was available just about every night until about 10 or 11 pm.
Some beaches were more popular than others for bicycles and wildlife. Certain areas around Sea Pines were great places to go if you wanted to see dolphins or other wildlife. There was a lot of bike traffic in the Sea Pines area. You must pay attention to what you are doing, the people on bikes can come out of nowhere. This is true regardless of whether you are driving or walking in the Sea Pines area.
I highly recommended a Hilton Head vacation to anyone. We plan on spending a lot more time there. It is a great trip for the whole family. There are things for kids to do and also things to keep the parents and grandparents interested. It is even fun if you want to do nothing but lay back a relax on the beach for a while.
